Custom Kitchen Cabinetry, Made to Measure

Carcass16 mm moisture-resistant board, 1 mm ABS edged

The part of a kitchen you stop seeing

Doors get chosen in a showroom. Carcasses get chosen on a schedule. The box behind the door carries the load, holds the hinge screws and decides whether a run still closes square in fifteen years. Made to measure means we set that substrate deliberately, then match the door to how the kitchen is actually used — which is rarely the same answer twice.

Carcass substrates, plainly

Three boards do almost all the work in Melbourne kitchens. They differ in how they hold a screw and how they behave when water finds a join.

Moisture-resistant board16 mm HMR, ABS edged

The default for kitchen boxes. Stable, takes hardware well and tolerates the splashes that reach a sink cabinet. Damage means replacing a panel rather than repairing it.

Plywood15–18 mm birch or hoop ply

Lighter and stronger through the screw line, which matters under loaded drawer banks and long unsupported spans. Costs more per metre and leaves an edge you either expose deliberately or cover.

Standard particleboard16 mm, non-moisture-resistant

Cheapest per linear metre and acceptable in dry overhead runs. Sustained water at a join swells it permanently, so we keep it away from sinks, dishwashers and laundry-adjacent walls.

Warm timber cabinet doors with dark vertical pull handles, strongly lit from the side.

Four doors, four different arguments

Timber veneer0.6 mm real timber on an MDF substrate

Grain can run continuously across a whole run when leaves are sequence-matched. It marks, but it can be re-sanded and re-coated years later.

LaminateMatte or textured face, 1 mm ABS edge

The hardest-wearing face per dollar. Edges decide its lifespan: a properly pressed ABS edge holds, a thin one lifts first at the dishwasher.

Two-pack painted2-pac polyurethane, sprayed on routed MDF

Any colour and any profile, including shaker detail, with no visible edge. Corners chip, and a touch-up shows unless the whole door is re-sprayed.

ThermolaminatedVinyl wrapped over MDF, seamless faces
Wrapped in a single skin, so there is no edge to lift and no join to clean. Keep it clear of unvented ovens; sustained heat is what eventually releases the wrap. Door choice also drives the benchtop and handle lines that sit beside it.

Where cabinetry either holds or announces itself

Hardware and fit are the two lines most often trimmed to make a number work, and both show up about two years in — a drawer that no longer self-closes, a filler that opened a gap. They are specified in writing at design stage, not decided on site.
Specification
•  Edging — 1 mm ABS, colour-matched, radiused•  Hinges — soft-close, clip-on, three-way adjustable•  Runners — full-extension undermount, rated by load•  Handles — pull, edge-pull or routed finger recess
Older floor plans
•  Out-of-square walls — scribe fillers cut on site•  High ceilings — bulkhead, or cabinetry to the cornice•  Sloping boards — levelled on packers before scribing•  Chimney breasts — cabinet depth stepped to suit

Interwar and post-war homes across Bentleigh, McKinnon and Ormond rarely give a square room. Made-to-measure joinery absorbs that; flat-pack modules leave it visible as gaps.

Questions worth asking first

Can new cabinetry match what is already in the room?

Sometimes closely, rarely exactly. Laminate and painted finishes can be matched to a current colour, but existing doors have aged in daylight and the new ones have not. Where a match matters, replacing a full elevation reads better than blending one cabinet into an old run.

Is custom cabinetry only worth it in a full renovation?

No. Where the existing carcasses are sound and the layout works, new doors, hardware and a new benchtop change the room without touching plumbing — that scope sits under kitchen makeovers. Where boxes have swollen or the layout fights the room, replacing everything is the cheaper decision over time.

When is cabinetry actually measured?

Twice. Once at design stage to draw and cost the job, and again as a check measure after demolition, when the real wall line is visible. Manufacture follows that second set of numbers, which is why cabinetry sits at stage seven of the twelve-stage process rather than at the start.

Which parts can be repaired later, and which cannot?

Hinges, runners and handles are replaceable components and should be treated as consumables over decades. Veneer can be re-finished; painted doors can be re-sprayed as whole leaves; laminate and wrapped doors are replaced rather than repaired. The cabinetry guide sets these out side by side.

Bring the box and the door into the same schedule

Send the room dimensions, what you want kept and what is failing, and we will come back with a cabinetry scope written line by line. General questions can go through the contact form instead.
Project records are documented to one fixed structure — suburb, property type, brief, before/after, layout, cabinetry, benchtops, materials, design solution and final result — and published at /projects/ as work is documented.
