Custom Cabinetry

Carcass16 mm board, moisture-resistant under sinks

Cabinetry made to the dimensions of your room rather than to a module width — for kitchens across Bentleigh, Bentleigh East, McKinnon, Ormond and nearby suburbs.

Cabinetry is the largest single line in a kitchen quote and the one you stop seeing the day it goes in. Two runs can look identical at handover and diverge four years later: one has a carcass sealed on every face and runners rated for the weight above them, the other does not. What follows is the specification in the order it is decided.

Specified line by line

Each line below is fixed before manufacture and written into the quote. Where a choice is a genuine trade-off rather than a preference, we say which way it falls and why.

Drawers, runners and what goes inside

Below the benchtop, drawers beat doors for almost everything except bins and appliance cupboards: you see the back of a drawer without kneeling. The decision that matters is the runner. A pot drawer carries far more than a cutlery drawer, and load rating is specified per drawer rather than per kitchen.

Deeper storage — walk-in and butler’s pantries, appliance cupboards, corner solutions — is set out under Pantry & Kitchen Storage Solutions, and cabinetry inside a bench run is covered on Kitchen Islands.

How a cabinetry run reaches your kitchen

02  Measure — walls checked for square, floor for level, services located03  Design — cabinet widths, drawer stacks and appliance openings set04  Quote — carcass, fronts, hardware and panels itemised05  Material selection — door, finish, edge and handle confirmed in writing07  Cabinetry — cut, edged and assembled to the confirmed sheet10  Installation — levelled, fixed and scribed to the walls as built11  Finishing — doors and drawers adjusted so gaps read even

Questions worth asking early

Four that change the drawings rather than the styling.

Can cabinetry be made for walls that aren't square?

That is the usual condition in older Bentleigh homes. Cabinets are built square and the difference is absorbed by scribes, fillers and end panels cut on site, which is why the measure stage matters more than the showroom visit.

Is timber veneer the same as solid timber?

Veneer is a real timber face on a stable substrate, so a tall door stays flat where solid timber would move with the seasons. Grain can be sequence-matched across a run; that has to be specified before manufacture, not chosen at delivery.

What does going handleless actually change?

A routed finger-groove or J-pull channel alters door thickness, opening clearance and the edge you touch a hundred times a week. It reads cleanest on long uninterrupted runs — see Modern Handleless Kitchens.

Can we keep the existing layout and carcasses?

If the boxes are sound and square, new fronts, hardware and a new benchtop change the kitchen without a strip-out. That scope is set out under Kitchen Makeovers; if the layout itself is the problem, start at Complete Kitchen Renovations.

Tell us the run you're replacing

Wall length, ceiling height, the appliances staying and the one cupboard that never works — that is enough to talk sensibly about carcass, fronts and hardware before anyone measures.
