Small Kitchen Renovations & Galley Kitchens

ConstraintWalkway width is decided before door style

Units, semis and period cottages across Bentleigh, McKinnon and Ormond share the same problem: a narrow room that still has to hold everything. This scope covers the layout moves, storage and finishes that make that room work.

A compact kitchen is a dimensions problem first

Bench depth, walkway width and the swing of an oven door decide more in a small kitchen than any door colour. Recover 300 mm along one wall and a galley stops reading as a corridor. Everything that follows — carcass, front, benchtop, handle — is then chosen to keep a narrow room light, quiet and uncluttered rather than to make a statement.

Clearances that actually work

These are the figures a compact plan is tested against before anything is drawn. Where a room cannot meet one of them, something else gives: a shallower run, a sliding bin, an integrated appliance, or a door that swings the other way.

What changes without structural work — and what doesn't

Most small kitchens gain their space from joinery rather than demolition. It is worth knowing early which move sits inside a straightforward renovation and which one pulls in engineering, services relocation or approvals, because that line is where a compact project changes character.

The first two are drawn and built as part of the cabinetry package. Relocating services means the plumbing and electrical stage carries more work and has to be sequenced before benchtop template. Opening a wall brings in engineering documentation and the relevant approvals, and is settled at design stage rather than on site.

The schedule for a small kitchen

A compact kitchen usually leaves three lines out: no island, no second run of cabinetry, no butler’s pantry. What stays on the schedule is cabinetry, benchtop, splashback and storage — and in a narrow room those four are decided in that order, because each one sets the dimensions the next has to live inside.

Project records are documented to one fixed structure — suburb, property type, brief, before/after, layout, cabinetry, benchtops, materials, design solution and final result — and published at /projects/ as work is documented.

Questions about compact kitchens

Four that come up early, answered in terms of what they change on the schedule.

Can a galley kitchen take an island?

Rarely, and only where the room can still give 1000 mm of walkway on both sides. A peninsula off one end of the run, or a 400 mm-deep bench with stool seating, usually delivers the same use of space without closing the passage.

Do slimline appliances compromise the kitchen?

A 450 mm dishwasher, a 600 mm oven with a separate 600 mm cooktop and an integrated fridge of shallower depth are all specified at design stage, not chosen late. Fixing appliance dimensions first is what keeps a tight run from losing a cabinet.

Will full-height cabinetry make the room feel smaller?

Not if it is kept to one wall and the opposite side stays open above the bench. Carrying joinery to the bulkhead reads as a single plane rather than a row of boxes, and a matte or satin front in a light tone keeps the wall quiet.

How does a small renovation run on site?

Through the same twelve stages as any other kitchen — consultation, measure, design, quote, material selection, demolition, cabinetry, plumbing and electrical, benchtops and splashback, installation, finishing, handover. A compact room simply spends less time in each. See our 12-step process and how long kitchen renovations take.
